If you wanna learn about Postgres data types, the first several modules of Aaron Francis’ Mastering Postgres class are free. While you’re at it, PGconf.eu’s videos from October are up on YouTube.
If you need to query older versions of rows, Stefanie Janine Stölting shows how to implement time travel. What I love about this post is that it also shows a lot of details about how to implement a system of triggers to manage data movement – useful even if you’re not doing time travel.
Where do PostgreSQL users hang out, Peter Eisentraut wonders? This was actually a big driver behind me starting SmartPostgres.com – not because I wanted it to be a place for people to hang out, but just because it feels like the PostgreSQL community is on the cusp of a lot of changes as new users continue to pour in, looking for help.
Postgres hasn’t gotten slower over the years, as Tomas Vendras illustrates with a deep series of OLTP benchmarks and OLAP benchmarks. I would love to see that kind of analysis across all database platforms, but it’ll get harder in the age of the cloud when it’s hard to rewind back to an older version of a cloud provider’s proprietary database platform.
